What is GIF, and why convert it?

Every GIF draws from a palette of at most 256 colours, and the format can chain multiple frames together to create the looping clips it's famous for. That made it ideal for the simple icons, buttons and reaction animations of the early internet, and it's still everywhere today. The limits show up when you need a clean, single image: the narrow palette can leave visible banding, and a GIF you've saved may really be one frame of an animation. Converting to PNG hands you a modern, lossless still picture with full colour and sharp edges. Be aware that PNG does not store animation, so an animated GIF is flattened to its first frame — the loop itself is not kept.
