Why convert JPG to PNG?
JPG is a lossy format: every time it's saved, a little detail is discarded to keep the file small. That's fine for sharing photos, but it's a problem when you need a clean working file. Converting to PNG gives you a lossless copy that won't degrade further with each edit, and unlocks features JPG simply doesn't have — most importantly an alpha channel for transparency. When you actually need PNG
- A site or app only accepts PNG uploads (some logo, avatar and design tools do).

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No — detail already lost to JPG compression can't be recovered. But the PNG won't lose any more, which makes it a good working format for editing.
Why would my PNG be larger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless and stores every pixel, so for photographs it is normally bigger than the compressed JPG you started with. That's the cost of a lossless copy.
Will transparency be added automatically?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts fully opaque — but it now supports an alpha channel, so you can add transparency in an editor afterwards.
