What is HEIC, and why does it cause problems?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the file format Apple has used by default for iPhone and iPad photos since iOS 11. It stores images using HEVC/H.265 compression, which packs roughly the same visual quality as JPG into about half the file size. That is great for saving space on your phone, but the format is still poorly supported outside Apple's ecosystem. Many Windows apps, older photo editors, content management systems, web upload forms and Android devices either refuse to open .heic files or show an error. Converting to PNG turns those photos into a format that virtually every program on every operating system can read.
Why convert HEIC to PNG specifically?
PNG is a lossless format: it reconstructs every pixel exactly, with no blocky compression artifacts and no further quality loss when you save. That makes HEIC → PNG the right pick when image fidelity matters more than file size — for example:
- Editing and retouching: screenshots, diagrams, product shots and graphics stay crisp through repeated edits.
- Transparency: PNG supports an alpha channel, so it is the format to choose if you later need a transparent background.
- Text and sharp edges: logos, UI captures and line art look cleaner in PNG than in JPG, which can blur fine detail.
- Archiving: a lossless master copy avoids the generation loss that happens each time a JPG is re-saved.
The trade-off is size. Because PNG never throws data away, files are usually several times larger than the original HEIC. If your goal is emailing, uploading or sharing photos rather than editing them, HEIC to JPG or HEIC to WebP will give you much smaller files.

Should I convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?

Is the PNG conversion really lossless?
Yes. PNG stores image data without lossy compression, so the converted file keeps full detail with no artifacts. That is also why there is no quality slider — there is nothing to trade away.
Why are my PNG files so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses efficient lossy compression, while PNG is lossless and keeps every pixel. A larger file is the normal price of lossless quality. If size matters more than fidelity, convert to JPG or WebP instead.
Will transparency be preserved?
PNG supports transparency, so any transparent areas are kept. Standard iPhone photos are fully opaque, but the alpha channel is available if you edit the PNG later.
Can I batch convert hundreds of files?
